Government and Private Sector's Initiatives to Raise Awareness About Malaria to Drive Global Malaria Treatment Market During 2022–2030

According to our latest study on " Malaria Treatment Market Forecast to 2030 – Global Analysis –Treatment, Route of Administration, and Distribution Channel," the market is expected to grow from US$ 3,296.98 million in 2022 to US$ 24,487.73 million by 2030; it is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 28.5% during 2022–2030. The market growth is primarily attributed to an increasing prevalence of malaria and government and private sector's initiatives to raise awareness about malaria. However, counterfeit antimalarial drugs and subsequent drug resistance are hindering the market growth.

As per the WHO data, total funding for the control and elimination of malaria reached ~US$ 3 billion in 2019; the governments of endemic countries such as South Africa and Asia collectively contributed 31% (~US$ 900 million) of the total fund to create awareness and development of new vaccines for the treatment of the disease. Various private companies are also investing heavily in R&D activities to reduce the incidence of malaria. According to the Global Health Policy, the US government allocated a funding of ~US$ 1 billion in FY 2022 for malaria control and research activities. The US government, under the PMI Strategy 2021–2026, aims to manage the spread of malaria and reduce deaths caused by it, along with a long-term aim of eradicating the disease.

Governments of various countries across the globe with a high prevalence of malaria and sickle cell disease are deploying various strategies to eradicate the diseases by improving access to healthcare services, including treatment options, to the people. A few of the initiatives undertaken are as follows:
• Myanmar has a national malaria control plan that the Global Fund has approved, and by 2030, it is expected to eliminate the disease caused by P. falciparum. The universal healthcare coverage in the country also includes access to malaria diagnosis by means of microscopy or rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs).
• The government of Thailand has implemented a National Malaria Elimination Strategy (NMES) 2017–2026 that further applies an integrated elimination strategy that aims to eliminate the disease by 2024.
• In January 2020, the Corporate Alliance on Malaria in Africa (CAMA) launched a strategic plan for 2021–2023 with an aim to reach millions of people through malaria control interventions and thereby scale up prevention activities in Africa.
Thus, the abovementioned initiatives to spread awareness about malaria disease reinforce the eradication efforts to bolster the malaria treatment market growth.

Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) to Bolster Malaria Treatment Market Growth

RDTs for malaria can improve the quality of management of the disease. RDTs are proven to be highly affordable and effective for public health programs implemented in low-resource settings. RDTs are widely used in remote areas with limited access to microscopy services. As a result, there has been a rapid rise in the demand for RDTs for malaria. Several RDTs have been developed to test the presence of malaria parasites in blood samples. Identifying and successfully treating malaria in low transmission areas is critical to reduce transmission and achieve complete elimination of the disease. According to the WHO, more than 70% of malaria diagnostic testing is performed using RDTs in Africa. Many companies are engaged in developing a wide range of RDTs with high sensitivities. A few of these developments are mentioned below.
• In November 2020, researchers from Rice University developed a simple microneedle patch similar to a bandage to detect malaria. With this development, the researchers have stepped on the path of reducing the burden of disease in countries struggling with poor health infrastructure. The microneedles loaded on the patch collect interstitial fluid, which contains several biomarkers that help in detecting malaria.
• In June 2020, the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND) and Scanwell Health, a US-based company, partnered to develop a smartphone app that uses machine learning to read RDTs for malaria. This app would help healthcare professionals to interpret and record test results. With the expected compatibility with RDT kits and mobile devices, the app is likely to receive significant attention in low- and middle-income countries.
